Bar On The Hill
06:00 PM – 08:00 PM
On August 21st, 2019 at 6pm, Newcastle University Diving and Exploration Society (N.U.D.E.S) is proud to be hosting a trivia night in support of HMRi research based at the university that is working to cure diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG).   DIPG is a highly aggressive and difficult to treat brain tumour found at the base of the brain in an area called the Pons, which is responsible for many of the body’s most vital functions such as breathing, sleeping, bladder control, and balance. Due to the diffuse nature and the delicate location of the tumour, it is impossible to surgically remove them safely from the brain – making DIPG very hard to treat.   It primarily affects children, with most diagnoses occurring between 5 and 7 years of age or younger. DIPG makes up 10-15% of all brain tumours in children, with about 150-300 new diagnoses per year in the United States. Unfortunately, a child diagnosed with DIPG today faces the same prognosis as a child diagnosed 40 years ago. Unlike many other paediatric cancers, there has been little progress in improving treatments and cure rates for DIPG over the last few decades. There is still no effective treatment and a very poor chance of survival. Only 10% of children with DIPG survive for 2 years following their diagnosis, and less than 1% survive for 5 years. The median survival time is 9 months from diagnosis. Current treatment is limited due to lack of knowledge of the disease. Options primarily include radiation therapy or chemotherapy.  Here is where WE can help. Join us for a fun night of trivia, followed by a raffle! $5 entry includes a ticket to our lucky door prize. There are hundreds of dollars worth of prizes to win! We are aiming to raise $1000! Come have some beers and test your knowledge for a good cause!

Seal Rocks
30-03-2019 07:30 AM – 31-03-2019 05:00 PM
Welcome my new NUDIES, and welcome back to my old NUDIES! Here is the official heads up about or first big trip of the year, the traditional Seal Rocks Camping/Diving Trip! This trip will start on Saturday 30th of March, arriving at the gear store no later than 7:45am to pack the gear and organise cars, and we should be back at the store at or before 5pm on Sunday 31st. This trip will involve two dives over two days at Seal Rocks, a shore dive to an island off a beautiful beach, an hour and a half drive up the coast.  This dive is quietly famous for it’s turtles, rays, dolphins and Grey Nurse, Port Jackson and Wobbegong sharks, so you’re bound to see something good on one or both of your dives! The dives will be led by our very own NUDES divers, who have dived the site more times than we can count, so any level of experience is welcome – we’ll look after you even if it’s your first dive out of training. In between dives, we’ll be camping at Treachery Camp site, and once curfew kicks in at 10, after dinner, we’ll commence our time-honoured migration to the nearest beach, where we will spend the rest of the night doing as uni student do. "Studying". Obviously. Next morning we strike camp, those of us who are feeling up to another dive will swim off our morning “sleepiness” from staying up late "studying", before re-loading the cars and heading home. Ticket price covers transport, food, camping fees and two air refills. We'll be carpooling, so if you've got a car you're willing to drive with passengers and/or gear, make sure to buy a "driver" ticket, so we know the numbers. Fuel will be reimbursed.  What to bring: - Towel and swimmers, sunscreen and hat. There are only two places to buy some limited food, so we will provide dinner (Saturday) and breakfast (Sunday) (we cater for vegan diets!), but you are resposible for any other food for the weekend. - Camping equipment: Tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, pillow. Tents can be hired from the Mountaineering club (must be a NUMC member) or often cheap tents are avaiable from Kmart.  Any questions, send me an email at cooperwalters217@gmail.com Get keen my dudes!
